Week One

Between architecture and landscape

Reciprocity

Contrast in density between the surrounding multi-residential apartments and the openness of the site

Community centre/complex
- clusters of activity bubbles arranged within the site

Commmunity centre takes on the form of the beach
- the meeting place

Materiality

Characteristics of water evoke movement
- rhythmic and cyclic nature

Water does not take on these characteristics unless a force acts upon it
- the wind and the moon

Need to be contained

Threshold

These boundaries/barriers contribut to the carving out of the site into the town
- an extension of the beach and the coastline

Two "thresholds" surrounding the site
- static barrier
- dynamic barrier

The junctions contribute to the procession into the site

Insertion

Maintain the existing relationship of the ocean and the community
- views through the site towards the ocean

Communication between the centre and the community that it was built for
-transparency

Levels of involvement
- at ground level = strongest connection
- from elevated level = somewhat detatched, awareness of CBCC

Infrastructure

Clusters of activity bubbles
- separate entties within the site

Layering of movement between the clusters of activity bubbles
- fluctuates according to season and use

Gentle pace within the community complex
- long winding paths between activity bubbles evoke the leisurely pace
